Design Problem:
In games with multiple systems, how can designers encourage players to try out different systems of the game?
Pattern Description:
One method is to limit players’ ability to progress in one system without advancing in other systems, which prevents players from advancing in a single system in isolation. Progression can be designed to require engagement across multiple systems simultaneously. This approach encourages players to try out different systems in the game. Resources such as food, can be designed to bridge different gameplay systems by requiring players to engage with various mechanics to obtain, upgrade, and effectively use it.
